Betsafe-LKL season kicks off on Saturday: the most teams to compete in the league since 2013
The new Betsafe-LKL season starts this coming Saturday with 12 teams competing in the league. This is the highest number of teams in the last 10 seasons. The championship has 33 additional matches this year and here are the first 6 matches that we will enjoy in the Gameweek 1:
The season will be opened on Saturday with matches in Prienai and Kėdainiai. Labas GAS will host CBet Jonava, while Nevėžis-Optibet will take on league newcomers Wolves. Before they first official match ever, Wolves look very intriguing: team coached by Rimas Kurtinitis has been successful in their friendlies as the tandem of Ahmad Cavers and Regimantas Miniotas looked really promising.
On Sunday, the defending champion Rytas Vilnius will face its rival Uniclub Casino - Juventus at Utena. Before that, runner-up Lietkabelis Panevėžys will host Pieno žvaigždės Pasvalys. The biggest intrigue of the day is whether the Vilnius team, coached by Giedrius Žibėnas, has retained its championship character and whether their new players will fill in the shoes left by the departed players.
Žalgiris Kaunas will begin their Betsafe-LKL journey on Monday when they face a tough first assignment away to Neptūnas Klaipėda. Pieno žvaigždės Pasvalys will play the second match of their season, facing promoted Gargždai side at home on Tuesday. It will be exciting to see how former NBA player Ignas Brazdeikis will look in European basketball, as well as how the Gargždai club will perform in a higher level.
