Derby Intensity: Žalgiris Outlasts Rytas in the Season’s First Showdown

The first LKL sponsored by Betsson derby of the 2025–26 season had everything Lithuania loves about basketball — tension, pride, and two powerhouse clubs refusing to yield an inch. In front of a roaring Kaunas crowd, Žalgiris took a hard-earned 79–75 victory over Rytas Vilnius, reaffirming their place atop the standings and their hold on the league’s throne.

It wasn’t a blowout. It wasn’t a spectacle of scoring either. It was a grind — the kind of battle where experience, patience, and defensive precision ultimately made the difference.

A Tale of Two Halves

Early on, it looked like Rytas had cracked the champions’ code. Ignas Sargiūnas, electric as ever, carried Vilnius through the first minutes before Jerrick Harding’s isolation brilliance took over. By the end of the first quarter, Rytas led 21–15 and looked in rhythm.

But Žalgiris doesn’t panic. The defending champs found answers through Sylvain Francisco and Ąžuolas Tubelis, whose energy flipped the game’s momentum. Then came Deividas Sirvydis — a stretch of eight consecutive points that set the tone for Kaunas’ run. With Maodo Lo adding a dagger triple just before halftime, the hosts took a 42–38 lead into the break.

From there, it was classic Žalgiris basketball: suffocating defense, control of tempo, and relentless rebounding. Laurynas Birutis anchored the paint, while Francisco orchestrated with pace and flair. A 64–52 lead entering the final period felt like a statement — and though Rytas fought back behind Harding and Jordan Walker, time ran out before the comeback could take hold.

Champions’ Composure

This wasn’t the sharpest offensive display for either side — both posting season-low scoring totals — but that only made the result more revealing. Žalgiris showed the kind of resilience that wins championships: po a shaky start, they locked in, trusted their system, and found ways to score when it mattered most.

Francisco led the winners with 15 points and 5 assists, while Birutis added 8 points and 8 rebounds, embodying the steady interior presence that defines Kaunas’ style. The team’s defensive execution in the third quarter — holding Rytas to just 14 points — ultimately swung the balance.

Rytas’ Heart Still Beats Loud

For Rytas Vilnius, the defeat stings, but the message isn’t one of weakness. Harding’s 20 points and fearless shot-making kept them alive deep into the final minutes, while Sargiūnas and Walker added spark and pace. This was a test — and though Kaunas had the answers this time, the capital club made it clear they’re not far behind.

Artūras Gudaitis: The Anchor and MVP

Among the bright spots for Rytas was veteran center Artūras Gudaitis, who continues to be the emotional and physical core of this team. His strength under the rim, smart positioning, and leadership have brought stability to a lineup still shaping its identity.

Recently named the LKL sponsored by Betsson MVP for September–October, Gudaitis averaged 13 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and a 22 efficiency rating over that span — elite numbers that underline his two-way value. Beyond the stats, his presence has transformed Rytas’ locker room into one with renewed belief and maturity. As whispers about a possible EuroLeague return circulate, Gudaitis remains focused on the task at hand: chasing a championship in Vilnius colors.
